Why τ10

Τ (uppercase) or τ (lowercase) is the 19th letter of the Greek alphabet. It is written (in the Latin alphabet) and pronounced "tau". The number 10 is written "ten". So, τ + 10 = tau+ten = tauten!

The lower-case letter τ is used as a scientific symbol for for such things as:

  • The perceived motion-gap in General Tau Theory, a psychological principle of perception.
  • Torque, the rotational force in mechanics.
  • Tuning and Analysis Utilities (TAU) performance evaluation tool, computer science
  • Proper time in relativity.
  • The Golden ratio 1.618... (although φ (phi) is more common)
  • Ramanujan's tau function in number theory.
  • Tau in astronomy is a measure of opacity, or how much sunlight cannot penetrate the atmosphere.
  • Shear stress in continuum mechanics.
  • The prefix of many stars in the Bayer stellar designation system.

Many of the uses of τ are relevant to this site. This site will help change the size of an image so that it is no greater than necessary for the content to be accurately perceived. An image can be distorted so that it matches the Golden ratio.
